Cinnamon – a versatile spice for the Advent season

Dear Alcomo News readers,

The Advent season has arrived, and with it the time for warm spices that give us a cozy feeling of comfort. One spice that should not be missing at this time of year is cinnamon. Whether in cookies, mulled wine or Christmas decorations – cinnamon is a real classic. But what makes it so special? We take a look at the good properties of cinnamon and also discuss the potential risks.

Cinnamon: a healthy all-rounder

Cinnamon is not only a feast for the senses, but also offers many health benefits:

1. Rich in antioxidants:

Cinnamon protects our cells with its polyphenols and helps the body to fight off free radicals.

2. Supports digestion:

Especially during the Advent season, when we like to indulge a little more, cinnamon helps with digestion and alleviates gastrointestinal complaints.

3. Promotes heart health:

Studies show that cinnamon can have a positive effect on cholesterol levels and is therefore good for the heart.

4. Regulates blood sugar:

Cinnamon, especially the cassia variety, can improve insulin action and stabilize blood sugar levels – ideal after a Christmas cake!

5. Naturally anti-inflammatory:

The ingredients, such as cinnamaldehyde, have an anti-inflammatory effect and strengthen the immune system – just the thing during the cold season.

Caution with cinnamon: risks we should know about

In addition to its good properties, there are also a few points that should be borne in mind when consuming cinnamon:

  • Coumarin content:

Cassia cinnamon contains more coumarin, a substance that can be harmful to the liver in large quantities. For a safe Advent season, we therefore recommend Ceylon cinnamon, which contains significantly less coumarin.
  • Impurities:

Unfortunately, spices such as cinnamon can also be contaminated with harmful substances. It is therefore worth paying attention to certified organic quality to ensure purity.
  • Allergies and interactions:

Some people are sensitive to cinnamon. Cinnamon can also influence the effect of certain medications such as blood thinners.

A pleasure in moderation – and with care

We recommend for carefree enjoyment:

  • Preferably use Ceylon cinnamon to enjoy the health benefits.
  • Look out for high-quality products with an organic label.
  • Enjoy cinnamon in moderate amounts – this ensures taste and safety.
